Time over time, I've had a war waged against me
The war on drugs was a war on me
Public policies were a war on me
You can isolate me behind these bars
But you can't take away my voice
I will keep shouting
"Do the crimes justify the time?"
The lines on the legal papers
Have become the bars on my cell
They wrote injustices into my story
From the moment I was born
They are not hidden to me
So I ask again,
Do my crimes justify the time?
Do the scales tip differently
When they see my name
When they see my race
When they see my zip code
or the schools to which I went
So I will keep asking
Do my crimes justify the time?
Justice may not be blind
But it chooses who it sees
